There are so many living things around us.  The grass on the lawn, the tree you sit under for shade, and yourself.  All of these organisms have something in common.  They are composed of compounds of carbon.  Most easy to describe are hydrocarbons, made of hydrogen and carbon.  Basic organic molecules can also include halogens(F, Cl, Br, I), Oxygen(O), and Nitrogen(N).  These all form special classes of organic molecules.
